It shows Tristan and Isolde (or Iseult), a couple known from chivalric romance tales: Tristan was a Cornish knight who shared an adulterous relationship with the Irish princess Isolde. The story was probably influenced by the Arthurian romance of Lancelot and Guinevere, and has had a significant impact on Western art and literature.
