Growing up, one of my best friends in school was named Doug. I often wondered why his name wasn't just spelled 'Dug' because that's what it sounds like. He told me, "Because people always mistake the 'U' for an 'O' and they would call me DOG".
Seems reasonable to me.
My friend named 'Doug' was quiet and unassuming until a certain point...then Oh Nelly! You did not want to push him beyond that point, that's why we should all 'Beware of Doug'.
