Amateur Ham Radio QRG - Amateur Radio Operator. Amateur radio is a hobby that most people have gotten into over the years, and it has grown considerably from its beginnings back in the 1890's. One of the first uses for ham radio was during World War I, when soldiers would use it to talk with each other. At that time, radios were used strictly for communication purposes and there wasn't much else you could do with them except listen and talk on them. These were referred to as "amateur" radios and hence came the name "amateur radio".
